BENEFITS OF RIGID SPORTS STRAPPING TAPE
Rigid Strapping Tape has been used now for quite some time in sport to prevent injuries.
Documented proof of sport strapping tape goes back as far as 1895 by Dr Virgil Gibney in relation to the treatment of sprained ankles. This was then modified by a Dr Walter Galland who gave additional strapping to limit the lateral movement of the ankle. Then in 1986 Jenny McConnell published an article on management of a Patella (Kneecap) problem which then lead to several more articles being written on the effectiveness of adhesive tape as a ‘therapeutic tool’ in management of musculoskeletal (muscle & joints) conditions. As a result a large range of taping techniques evolved with much of it well proven treatments based on evidence based results.
The main purposes and possible Taping techniques are as follows
-Injury or Re-injury prevention
-Reduction of strain on injured or vulnerable tisses
-Provision of increased passive stability of anatomical structures
-Enhancement of Proprioception
-Compression of Oedema, or Lymphatic drainage*
